Three remarkable sections that give three very different textures to the speaker’s grief: a desire to share the Yew’s ancient indifference to the dead; a bold but uncertain response to personified Sorrow; a saddened/ing but oddly encouraging nighttime dialogue with the heart. A common thread across the three poems is a hollow immensity (Nature, the dark) against which the speaker contrasts the little lives of men.
